Outburst Theatre St Laurence Church

Catford, London, SE6 – Sept to Nov 2018

Partnered with St Laurence Church, Outburst Theatre is bringing together children in Years 5 & 6 from different Catford primary schools and local senior residents to research local history and stage a live theatre production about the events of 1968 in Catford. This project gives FREE drama training and FREE research training to all participating children and brings senior residents together with them to share their stories from the 60s.  The process will also be filmed for a docu-film to be screened publicly and then kept in the Lewisham Archives. We have room for 50 children and we will offer these spaces on a first come, first served basis.

PARENTS’ MEETING – 18th July – St Laurence Church – 6pm – 8pm

You are invited to a Parents’ Meeting where parents and carers of all interested children can attend to watch a short presentation about the project and to ask any questions about it. Children are also welcome to attend and get a taste of what it’s like to work with our drama facilitators. Parents can register their children at the Parents’ Meeting, too.

Outline of Commitment

Purpose: Exploring the history of Catford and Lewisham 50 years ago, including subjects such as immigration, the floods, politics, sport, popular culture, the architecture of the rebuild of St Laurence’ Church and childhood.

Dates: 15th Sept – 3rd November 2018

Location: St Laurence’ Church, Catford.

Stage 1 Research Training Day

Sat 15th Sept : Children will spend a day being trained by members of the Age Exchange in how to collect and collate information from archives and from conversations with elderly residents.

Stage 2Reminiscence Day

Sat 22nd Sept: Children will meet local reminiscence groups and other community groups, such as Catford Reminiscence Group and Aging Well in Lewisham, where they can interview them and discuss their memories from the year 1968.

Stage 3 – Rehearsals

From 26th Sept to 18th Oct – : Weekly after-school rehearsals, on either Wednesdays or Thursdays (depending on which group your child is in) from 4pm – 6pm.

Thurs 25th Oct & Fri 26th Oct (Half Term Week) – Full Day Rehearsals

Thurs 1st Nov & Fri 2nd Nov – Evening rehearsals

Stage 4Performance

Sat 3rd November – 2 x performances in immersive, promenade style, open to the public to attend.

PLEASE NOTE: This project is being filmed for the purpose of making a docu-film to be screened publicly and to be kept in the Lewisham Archives. All parents and carers will be asked to sign release forms, giving consent for the children to be filmed.
